HOW TO HIRE AND KEEP QUALITY HOUSEKEEPING STAFF

From Stuart Mullins Executive Search International

IThe Hotel and Resort Market in Australia is running on empty, there is a severe shortage in most areas in hospitality. Food and Beverage, Front Office Staff, Room attendants the list goes on.

Why?

Overseas is booming - Dubai, Oman , Saudi, Jordan, Maldives, Macau, China, Vietnam, India, Hong Kong, Seychelles, Singapore ,South America. And more.

Dubai has another 50 hotels coming on line in the next 18 months, most of which dwarf what we have in Australia. In fact they have been asked recently by the Government to slow down

500, 600, 700 rooms with 7, 10, 14 Food and Beverage outlets. Acre sized swimming pools, super spas, and large gyms.

Dubai Land with Universal Studios, The Casino's in Macau throwing cash at you, China is going well, as is most of S.E Asia

Over 100 hotels and Resorts being built in China, The Maldives opened up another 30 islands for Resort development.

Resort World on Denaru Island is huge with a Casino, Hard Rock Hotel and around 2000 rooms going up

The Australian Mining industry is booming and able to offer more $$$$'s as they can make Billions in profits.

Large Shopping Centres are springing up everywhere and they, like Hotels require cleaners, and pay quite well.

These days It’s cheaper to fly, so easier to move from one country or one city to another.

So why is there a shortage in Australia of quality floor staff, housekeeping attendants in the Hotel industry.

Pay, conditions, opportunity are a big factor in acquiring staff.

These Hotel companies Over Seas offer tax free ( net dollars ) salary with no outgoings, this is a big, big saving to the Floor attendant , Housekeeping supervisor or Executive Housekeeper.

Why would you work in Australia when you can get better pay else where and in most cases overseas, tax free , net US dollar, plus Free Accommodation, F&B Medical plus bonus.

What you are up against here in Australia is that this country has become incredibly expensive. No matter what spin the Government or big business tell you, you can feel it in the hip pocket everyday.

The tax system does not assist one little bit. Plus levies, fees, from all levels of Government and Corporate enterprise eating into your pay packet. Land of the fair go or land of the gouge?

Sydney alone is one of, if not the most expensive cities in SE Asia.

The call of US net dollars, no tax and no expenses outgoing at the end of the month is very, very alluring, especially in quality SE Asian or Middle Eastern locations.

Ex pats will not usually come home to pay 46c in the dollar, plus our myriad of levies and fees which is stifling. Have you seen your airline ticket lately, or your rates notice have you noticed the little add ons?

Q: So how do you get quality housekeeping people? Good question? My answer:

1. In my opinion some of the most dedicated Housekeeping staff are in SE Asia and India, Maldives and these people have learnt from the best 4 and 5 stars properties in the world and will bring this expertise and attention to detail to Australia. A quality 4 star in SE Asia, in Australia would be in some cases a good 5 star.

2. South Pacific same as above these people are willing to learn, and have great smiles however this may be lost after they see the tax and fees taken out of their pay.

3. Advertise in New Zealand, as their dollar is less than the Aussie and this can be used a quality marketing tool. In fact anywhere where the countries dollar is quite a bit less you may be on a winner

This to me is are great markets to tap, however, the hurdles that you have to overcome to get them here through government red tape and unions stating,” this is taking true blue Aussies jobs” ………..BOLLOCKS.

You would have already discussed this with your GM or HR Manager. A good talented HR Manager knows how to woo the powers to be.

To me best web sites to contact overseas applicants are:

www.ehotelier.com shows all hospitality recruitment companies world wide and by clicking on their web sites you will find a myriad of positions.

www.catererglobal.com excellent for viewing available engineering positions you will be amazed.

For NZ and pacific of course use Seek or Career One

Yes you will receive 100s of resumes but you will find gems, it takes time and effort however you may well end up with some very, very talented and dedicated people

If you want to keep your people:

DO NOT MAKE A PROMISE YOU CANNOT OR THE HOTEL CANNOT KEEP OR WILL NOT LIVE UP TO.

THIS IS THE NO 1 REASON WHY PEOPLE LEAVE....BROKEN PROMISES, NOT SALARY.

OFFER A ROOM WITH A VIEW. GIVE THE CANDIDATE A CLEAR VISION
OF WHERE THEY CAN GO AND HOW THEY CAN DEVELOP. WITHOUT VISION THERE IS NO HOPE. DON’T BS JUST TO GET THEM ON BOARD.

Very Best Regards,

Stuart Mullins
